Make your own seed packets

Are you looking for a nice gift idea for a birthday, Mother’s Day, Easter or just because? How about seeds or seeds? Packed with care and in an environmentally friendly way, you will certainly make plant lovers and hobby gardeners – or those who want to become one – very happy.

Especially for impatient gardeners it is important that the seeds germinate quickly and that you can see results quickly. Sunflowers, marigolds and summer asters, for example, work well. The first seedlings appear here on the sixth day. Cress and tomatoes also work wonderfully.

Sustainability tip: simply collect the seeds in your own garden. Late summer is just the right time for it.

Idea 1: Seed bags made from coffee filters

Instead of coffee, you fill the filter bags with plant seeds. Folded into small flower pots and provided with a beautiful label, they become a super sweet gift idea. Or you stick the seed bag on a folding card and finish it with a self-designed paper flower.

You need this:

  • Flower seeds, preferably collected by yourself
  • coffee filter bags
  • Folded card
  • patterned wrapping paper or beautiful motifs from magazines
  • Double sided tape
  • Felt pens in different colors
  • scissors
  • paper and clothespins
  • Option: construction paper and motif punch

And this is how it’s done:

First turn the filter bag inside out and smooth the edges. Then you fold the upper edge once or twice about five millimeters. Both sides are then folded back to create a flower pot shape.

make label

Using your fingers to hold the opening open, stuff the flower seeds inside, then tuck the already folded edge over the edges. Finished!
If you hand over the gift personally, make a suitable label: punch out the shape from construction paper with a motif punch, label it with the type of plant and attach it to the “flower pot” with a small clothespin or a nice paper clip.

Design card

If the floral greeting goes in the mail, stick the coffee filter to the folded card with a small piece of double-sided adhesive tape. You design the flower according to your personal preferences and creativity: You can simply paint it on or create a flower from leftover material such as wrapping paper or magazine pages.

Idea 2: Folded seed bags

In contrast to store-bought envelopes, which are usually far too big for the delicate seeds, self-folded bags are ideal for storage or as packaging to give away. It is up to you whether you take white paper and design it yourself with your children with paint and fingerprints, for example, or whether you process beautiful scraps of paper. Of course you can also stick the bags on a folding card, embellish it with a flower and send it as a greeting.

And this is how it’s done:

Draw a 14 x 14 cm square (the large bags are 20 x 20 cm) on your chosen paper and cut it out. Then you fold it diagonally in half. Then first fold the left tip and then the right tip to about the middle of the opposite side. Fold the resulting “open” triangle down and insert the lower triangle into the slit on the right side. Now fill in the seeds and close the bag by inserting the second triangle into the slit.

Idea 3: Send seeds for Easter

Spring- like flower greetings also bring great joy at Easter ! Simply fold the top corners of the seed packets backwards into a bunny shape , fill them and stick them on the folding card. Draw the face and draw the ears. Then only a few personal wishes are missing and off you go!
